Presenting practical ideas for designing effective e-learning
We've collected examples of innovative Australian e-learning course designs for vocational education and training (VET) and drilled down to the details to show you how they work. Then we've summarised your design options in e-learning.
You'll find answers to these questions:
* How are teachers using e-learning in VET?
* Why do they choose e-learning? How does it help?
* How do they go about it? What's required?
* What options are available for designing e-learning?

Finding out how to make e-learning work in practice
See five very different examples of how teachers have used e-learning to meet their learners' needs. Each sample design includes:
* A photo story (3-4 minutes)
Listen to the designer describing the learners, the challenges and the solutions - and how well it has worked.
* A learning design map (1 page)
View a snap-shot of how each course is constructed, with click-and-view samples of the courseware and handouts.

Selecting the type of e-learning to suit your purpose
As well as preparing and organising the learning strategies (the content, activities, support and assessment), designing e-learning usually includes making decisions about:
* the best blend of delivery methods (eg online system, communication tools, workshops, on-job activities)
* the most suitable learning approach for the purpose (eg collaborative, self-directed, simulated workplace).
We've described some of the learning approaches commonly used for e-learning in VET in Australia. Most educators use a mixture of two or more of these approaches. Check out the options, revisit the solutions in the sample learning designs, and clarify your own preferences.
